Ladies of London star advises Meghan Markle ahead of wedding to Harry

Lady Julie Montagu moved from the US to be with her aristocratic husband – and offers some advice to Meghan on the transatlantic move and life in the UK

Lady Julie Montagu experienced a normal childhood, growing up in a small town in Chicago in the states. But her life changed when she wed Lord Luke Montagu, heir to the Earl of Sandwich, transporting her into life as part of the British aristocracy.

She told Closer that fellow American Meghan Markle may have to get used to some bizarre traditions and new rules and regulations in her new life as royal wife.

“I think Meghan will have to adjust to not only life as part of the royal family but also life as an American in a very British family. I met my husband through mutual friends at a party. I don’t think I quite understood what his title meant at first because we don’t learn about British aristocracy and royalty at school in America.

"I definitely noticed a huge difference between my new British relatives and myself. Americans wear their hearts on their sleeve and we’re quite vocal and loud. Brits are more reserved so I had to tone down the American!

"I don’t think Meghan should forget her American roots though because that’s obviously a side of her that Harry fell in love with. Being part of a royal or aristocratic family, there’s a lot of protocol to get used to. What cutlery to use, the right plates and glasses etc.

"My husband never comes down to breakfast in his pyjamas. Every meal is a formal affair and we dress accordingly. He learnt that through his family and I’d be surprised if Harry were any different.

"I expect Harry and Meghan will be able to enjoy nights with friends but they’ll probably be advised to do dinner parties with friends at their cottage in Kensington Palace or hire a private dining area in a restaurant. Meghan won’t be able to walk down the street on her own without bodyguards.

"I’m sure Harry will be an incredible teacher and guide her through everything. The most important thing to remember is that the royal family are still normal people. My husband may have a royal title but he’s the most down-to-earth person and I’m sure Harry is the same."
