Jacqueline Jossa has defended herself after being slammed online for appearing to make a controversial comment at the British Soap Awards.

The actress, who left her role as Lauren Branning in Eastenders earlier this year, was caught on camera telling former co-star Lacey Turner: “I think they all self-harm on that show,” after Hollyoaks won the Best Storyline award for Lily Drinkwell’s self-harm storyline.

A clip of the awkward moment was soon shared on social media and viewers watching this year’s awards, which took place last night (2 June) at London’s Hackney Empire, were quick to criticise Jacqueline.

One viewer tweeted the actress directly, writing: ““I think they all self harm on that show” - are you serious @jacquelineMjos ? Disgusting thing to say #SoapAwards.”

Another said: “Considering Jacqueline Jossa is a parent I’m so so shocked that she’d say such a thing about such a important topic that Hollyoaks addressed so well!!”

Shortly after the awards Jacqueline clarified her comments, taking to Instagram to insist that she wasn’t being disrespectful.

“Just to clear things up, Lacey asked me what the storyline was as we couldn’t hear. I answered with, ‘I’m not actually sure, I think they all self harmed on the show’,” she wrote on her Instagram story.

“I didn’t watch the show I only went from the clip I saw previous, which involved 3 girls on a bed… I haven’t watched the show recently so don’t actually know but always love it and wasn’t discrediting, I was literally answering what the story line was.”
