Holly Willoughby was reduced to tears on live TV yesterday as she was presented with an early birthday present from best friend Phillip Schofield

Ahead of her 38th birthday on Sunday, Holly was on tenterhooks as a crew member rolled out a trolly with her present on it – a basket full of adorable Pomeranian puppies!

Overwhelmed and instantly in love, it wasn’t long before the tears started flowing for Holly, who has a history of getting emotional when around cute animals.

Sadly, the puppies weren’t to keep as Phil confirmed she would have to give them back at the end of the show.

But Holly wasn’t about to let them go that easily, and begged producer husband Dan Baldwin to let her keep one.

“If my husband’s watching … darling please,” she implored.

Holly doesn’t have a dog (yet!) but she does two cats called Teddy and Bluebell, who regularly feature on her social media.

Viewers were quick to jump behind the cause and added their own pleas to let Holly keep the puppy, who she named Bertie.

“Take Berite home @hollywills you won’t regret it,” said one commenter.

“Holly you definitely need to keep one they’re so adorable,” said another, before asking, “Would you take it out in this cold rainy weather though & pick up its poo?”

Another commenter made an excellent point, too.

“I think Holly should keep the puppy and bring it into work everyday. Not only does it look adorable on her knee, it’s nice to include animals. Like the Blue Peter Dog, this could be the This Morning Dog. I could look at that dog every day for sure.”

However, some blasted the show as “irresponsible”, and reminded Holly that puppies are for life, not just for birthdays.

“How many calls will be made to puppy farms or a mobile in an advert in local papers offering these type of puppies today?? Irresponsible,” wrote one person.

The two of them regularly treat each other to special gifts, like Holly's present to Phil at Christmas.
