Fans of the Spice Girls have been desperate for a full reunion for years – with the five stars not being together on stage since 2012 at the London Olympics. But as their 30th anniversary approaches next year, rumours have been rife that Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, Mel Brown and Mel Chisholm could come together for a tour.
Mum-of-four Victoria, 49, was absent from the Spice Girls Reunion tour in 2019, with reports saying she was busy focusing on her business ventures instead. However, insiders now tell Closer that discussions are being had between the girls, but a spanner has been thrown in the works as Victoria and Geri – who has been married to F1 millionaire Christian Horner, 49, since 2015 – are butting heads.
The source says, “A 30th reunion tour would be amazing, and there’s been talks about something for years. Vic hadn’t been keen up until recently and she was close to agreeing on something exciting – until Geri said it didn’t quite agree with her and that she’d have to run it past her husband beforehand. Geri’s feelings towards doing
a full-blown reunion tour have changed recently.”
“Vic was clearly miffed and the other girls were furious at Geri, as they’ve been working on Vic now for years – but there seemsto be a power struggle between Vic and Geri as to who is actually the ‘Posh’ one in the group. It’s been getting quite toxic and passive aggressive.”
With her designer wardrobe and wealthy upbringing, Victoria was known as “Posh Spice” during the Spice Girls heyday. But in recent years, Geri, 51 – who was known as “Ginger Spice” and was iconic for her bright red hair and Union Jack dress – has immersed herself in upper class society after meeting and marrying Christian, who has a net worth of £53 million.
Geri – who shares daughter Bluebell, 17, from a previous relationship, and son Montague, six, with Christian – splits her time between her two homes – a sprawling Hertfordshire estate and an idyllic farm in Oxfordshire with swimming pools and an orangerie.
And it seems she’s swapped her Union Jack dress for a more refined style, as in recent years she’s almost always seen wearing white. Fans have also commented on how Geri – who grew up in Watford – now speaks with a different accent, with one writing, “Is Geri putting on a fake posh voice?” after the star shared a video to her social media.
The source says, “Now that Geri lives in the country, surrounding herself with new people and leading a different life than she did before, she really does see herself as the most genuinely posh member of the Spice Girls. She’s got aristocrats for neighbours and their plummy voices have really rubbed off on Geri. In her downtime, she loves cooking with her aga and reading books.
In fact, she quite turns her nose up at the way Vic and David are gallivanting all over the world and still partying on tequila-filled nights out. It’s just not who Geri is.”
They add, “The last time Geri performed she gave her iconic Union Jack dress a regal twist, and she thinks the other girls should follow suit. But if Vic does commit to a tour, she wants it to be edgy and has even said she would consider designing some of the tour outfits – which Geri has scoffed at.”
Tension within the group is nothing new, with Mel B, 48, previously revealing, “We fight, we argue, we make up. It’s always been like that.” Mel B and Vic were often dubbed frenemies, after the pair fell out back in 1995. Following the band’s formation, the five ladies jetted off on a bonding holiday to Hawaii – only for Posh to be left unimpressed after watching Mel’s holiday fling take a poo on the beach.
Drama further brewed after Mel B explosively revealed in 2019 that she and Geri had once slept together, adding, “She’s going to hate me for this because she’s all posh in her country house with her husband” – which reportedly left Geri furious.
And the insider now adds, “The drama used to be between Vic and Mel B, but now it seems to be focused around Geri. She and Vic are just not really seeing eye-to-eye, and the minute Vic expressed interest in the tour, it seemed as though Geri then wanted to pump the brakes. All the other ladies can see right through it for what it really is
– a classic power struggle.”
Geri has also recently featured in biographical sports movie Gran Turismo – a biopic about Formula 1 race driving – and sources add that she would like to try her hand at more acting in the future.
They say, “Geri feels she doesn’t really need the tour right now. She was thrilled with her part in Gran Turismo, knowing that her hubby would love seeing her in a film about racing. She’s more interested in doing things that are right for her, and has said that it’s Vic who will need to work around her for a change.”
