He was reportedly set to play a huge role in the first big story of 2015, which will see a minibus crash leaving 12 of the show's main characters injured.

Now reports claim that writers are scrambling to explain Steve’s sudden absence, and a source has told The Sun that show bosses aren’t expecting him back on set “any time soon”.

They said: “It’s a frightening time for him.

“He’s felt under the weather for a while, but it’s recently got worse.”

At present, Steve’s depression storyline is still developing and it is thought that producers were planning to develop the plot further in the New Year.

“The most important thing is Simon’s health,” the source continues. “He’s a great guy and gives everyone a lift on set.

“It’s a shock that he has had to pull out, especially when his character is so heavily involved in the storyline.”

We hope that Simon gets well soon - Corrie won't be the same without Steve McDonald.
