It’s shaping up to be one of the most toxic Hollywood divorce battles ever, with reports last week suggesting it could rumble on for another six years, while it’s estimated to have already cost each party £730k – or a total of £1.5m – in legal fees.
Things took an even uglier turn recently when leaked documents revealed Angelina Jolie wants to testify about Brad Pitt’s alleged domestic abuse amid an ongoing custody battle over their six children.
Last month, Angelina, 45, filed court papers indicating both she and her children are willing to offer “proof and authority in support” of her claims that Brad, 56, “attacked” their eldest son Maddox, 19, when the family took a private flight home from France just days before she filed for divorce in September 2016.
The incident allegedly happened after Maddox verbally defended his mum following a heated row between her and an “intoxicated” Brad, who Angelina had reportedly told to “sober up”.
Brad’s reps have claimed the private documents were leaked by Angelina’s camp in a “calculated” bid to sway opinion ahead of the conclusion of their trial. He strongly denies the widely publicised claims and was not arrested or charged for any abuse allegations at the time.
Angelina’s latest bombshell has not only left Brad “heartbroken” according to his pals, but has also thrown doubt on hopes that their long-running battle could reach a settlement soon.
Brad is fighting for 50-50 legal and physical custody of their six children, who include adopted children Pax, 16, and Zahara, 15, and the couple’s three biological children, Shiloh, 13, and twins, Vivienne and Knox, 11.
Brad and Angelina’s decade-long relationship saw the couple frequent the world’s most exclusive events, set up a joint charity foundation, and even star in films together. But five years on and they have taken very different paths.
Closer looks at the contrasting lives the two former lovers now lead…
Contrasting love lives
Angelina – who was previously married to actors Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton – has reportedly remained single since her split from Brad, insisting in interviews that her children are her number one priority.
Brad, however, has been linked to a string of women, including A-lister Charlize Theron, jewellery designer Sat Hari Khalsa, and, most recently, 27-year-old German model Nicole Poturalski.
Closer previously reported that Brad and his ex-wife Jennifer Aniston had been growing closer in recent months, with Brad supporting Jen through her ambition to adopt a child.
Fans around the globe were also delighted when the former couple’s highly-publicised reunion at the SAG Awards last year was caught on camera – sending die-hard fans wild amid hopes that Hollywood’s former golden couple would reunite. But the picture reportedly left Angelina “furious”.
Psychological therapist Emma Kenny says, “Statistically, men usually move on quicker than women after a break-up, so it’s not surprising that Brad has returned to the dating scene while Angelina has taken time to heal. Brad is totally entitled to date again, but it’s never nice seeing a partner move on, no matter how sure you are that going your separate ways is the right thing. Angelina is devoted to her kids and humanitarian work and likely doesn’t have time for a relationship.”
Different career paths
Since their split in 2016, Brad has thrown himself into his acting career, starring in 14 films and even winning his first Oscar for his role in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood in 2019. He’s also remained immersed in the Hollywood social scene – reconnecting with his former closer friends Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney.
But while Brad has strengthened bonds with A-list pals and immersed himself in work, Angelina has rarely been seen socialising or at showbiz events in recent years – only being seen out and about with her children and choosing to live a more low-key life. She said in an interview during their marriage that she didn’t have a large social circle, saying, “I stay home a lot. I’m not really social. I’ll talk to my family. I talk to Brad … But I don’t know, I don’t have a lot of friends I talk to. He is really the only person I talk to.”
She has also taken a significant step back from her career, only returning to work to reprise her role in Maleficent 2, three years after her split in 2019, and starring in fantasy film Come Away last year.
Opening up about her life post-Brad earlier this year, she said, “I continue to focus on [the children’s] healing. The past few years have been pretty hard. It’s slowly coming back, like the ice melting and the blood returning to my body.”
And Emma says, “Brad is clearly away a lot and throwing himself into his work, while Angelina is mostly at home with the kids. They may have made that decision together, but if childcare doesn’t feel shared then it can cause arguments.
“When one person is away a fair bit due to commitments and the other is holding the fort, that can cause tension if promises aren’t met. Brad being away a lot now will have been a big change in the children’s lives and may have caused stress for Angelina.”

Brad has thrown himself into sobriety, having previously cited his heavy drinking as one of the reasons for his break-up with Angelina – saying in 2019, “I’d taken things as far as I could, so I removed my drinking privilege.”

Meanwhile Angelina – who lives in a six-bedroom mansion just five minutes from Brad in LA – reportedly spends her free time having therapy sessions and doing cooking classes. She has admitted that she’s had to adapt to being a single mum of six, saying, “I’ve been trying to be really good at just being a homemaker and picking up dog poop and cleaning dishes and reading bedtime stories. And I’m getting better at all three.”
Emma says, “When you’re focusing on sobriety, you have to put yourself first, because if you don’t, it affects every other element of your life and can be much harder to get sober. Sometimes that can seem like the person in the recovery is neglecting others or other things, but it has to be done. Brad will no doubt have done that on his path to recovery, and it may have caused resentment. If Angelina has been at home, looking after the kids, while her ex is looking after his own needs, that can be interpreted as ‘well, he’s self-centered’, so it can lead to bitterness.”
