Andrea McLean may have only just recently celebrated her second wedding anniversary with husband Nick Feeney, but she has revealed the shock news that the pair are already having therapy.

Noting that she’s “had a bit of a bumpy year”, the Loose Womenpresenter said in a frank admission, “Nick and I have been going to counselling for the past five months or so.”

Sharing that when she told friends they asked if everything was alright, Andrea, 50, was quick to assure them. “No everything’s great. Actually we just wanted to make sure the communication lines are there,” she said. Andrea has her own health and lifestyle website, This Girl Is On Fire, which Nick, 46, helps her run and she admitted that their business relationship has had an effect on their marriage.

She said, “We run a website, we’re sitting side by side at the desk, we’re talking about work things every night when we get into bed. How can we communicate with each other so that we see each other as husband and wives and not just work partners.”

Psychologist, author and couples’ therapist Dr Kalanit Ben-Ari explained how mixing business with pleasure can complicate a relationship.

She told Bella, “Working together as a couple can add additional stress to any relationship. When you work together it can be tricky to put boundaries in place and shift to romance and intimacy.”

She adds, “Couples who work together need to be more mindful and conscious about clear division strategies for how to operate as a couple and as partners at work.” While working together in a marriage can be tough, Andrea and Nick’s relationship might be under strain regardless as our expert adds that the first years of a marriage can be the most difficult.

“There are several periods that are known to be more vulnerable for couples, including the first year of marriage. It’s an adaptation period for manoeuvring different expectations and needs and finding a new equilibrium,” she said.

Andrea was twice-divorced before she met current husband Nick on a blind date in 2014. They married in 2017. She wed her first husband Nick Green in 2000 after a 17-year relationship and they had son Finlay in 2001. However, the pair split after she had an affair with builder Steve Toms.

Andrea and Nick tried to work things out but eventually divorced and she went on to move in with Steve and they had daughter Amy in 2006 before marrying in 2009. That wasn’t to last either as she announced that she and Tom had separated, and she had moved out of their marital home in 2011.

With Andrea’s previous marriages having broken down, could she be heading for divorce number 3? Apparently, there is considerable risk of that happening.

Dr Kalanit revealed that if you’ve been divorced previously, you could be more likely to split in the future. She said, “Statistically, second marriages consistently do worse across all age groups. There are many reasons for this and the experience of already being a divorcee is a part of it. There is great pain and suffering from the divorce process.”

Not only that but with Andrea’s children from her previous marriages may affect a couple’s relationship as “blended families are challenging,” she said.

As well as Andrea’s two children – Finlay, 17, and Amy, 12, Nick has daughters Tialily, 16, and Sienna, 14, from his previous relationship and our expert Dr Kalanit said, “Bringing in two families together when children are involved create lots of challenges such as they may not approve of the partner and dividing time between all involved.”

However, it was Andrea’s kids that convinced her to marry Nick in the first place, as the Loose Women host was the unsure one. She said, “I genuinely didn’t want to get married again. It was the kids that made us change our minds. For them it was all about security. They want us all to be tied in together.”

As well couples counselling with her husband, Andrea added, “I’ve had counselling on my own this year – I’ve had a bit of a bumpy year - and couples counselling as well, and it’s made a huge difference. You realise what you’ve been lugging around [with you].”

For her part, Dr Kalanit suggested that might not be a great idea. She said, “Only in a few specific cases do I recommend doing individual therapy as the same time as couples’ therapy. Evidence shows that individual therapy is more likely to divide couples.

“In my experience, bringing all energy to the couples therapy sessions will be most beneficial for the couple.”

We hope Andrea and her husband can work through things together in 2020.
