The world of hair removal can be overwhelming and researching what’s right for you can often leave you with more questions than answers. If you’ve been wondering if Brazilian waxing is best, we’ve asked the experts all your most important questions, so you can be fully equipped for your next DIY session or salon visit.

Read on for our expert guide…

What is a Brazilian wax?

“A Brazilian wax can vary from salon to salon so it's best to double check when you're booking in as to what that particular salon includes in their Brazilian wax, “ says Ellen Kavanagh, co-founder of Waxperts. “Usually and most commonly it’s a bikini wax which leaves a small strip/triangle shape of hair above the mons pubis (pubic bone aka the front) and removes all from the labia and the bum. Ahollywood wax removes all hair completely.”

How should I prepare for a Brazilian wax?

“The best way to prepare for any bikini waxing is to come nice and freshly washed. You will usually be given an intimate wipe once you are in the room for a last-minute freshening up too. Also, avoid trimming your hair beforehand, your waxer can do that as trimming too short can affect getting a really good wax. Lastly, let your waxer know if you're on any medication so you can ensure the treatment is safe for you.”

Is a Brazilian wax painful?

“Anticipation causes the most pain so honestly try to relax and breathe. Also, keeping up with your waxing every 4-6 weeks will really help reduce any discomfort as usually, the hairs get sparser and weaker so less ouch over all!!”

What’s best: hot wax vs strip wax?

“Hot wax, sometimes called peelable wax is the best wax for face, underarm or any bikini waxing. It is more gentle for the skin on those delicate areas,” says Ellen, “Strip wax is ideal for leg or arm waxing. It can be a little more adhesive on the skin so we would avoid it on sensitive areas of the body.” A professional will be able to advise which wax is best for you so always ask if you’re not sure when booking.

Do I need to see a professional or can I do a Brazilian wax at home?

“It's up to you! If you go to a professional, check that they are using a quality premium wax brand like Waxperts and that they do not double dip. This is when the spatula is used repeatedly in the wax and it’s unhygienic.”

“If you want to try DIY-ing then start small and work up your confidence! It's totally doable and practice makes perfect. Heire (pronounced hair) has salon quality wax kits made by professional waxers with super easy-to-use and follow steps.”

How can I prevent ingrown hairs?

“Some ingrown hairs are caused by tight clothing where the hairs can’t grow out so just keep an eye out for that usually around the knicker line,” says Ellen. Ahead of waxing, exfoliating will help prevent ingrown hairs, “Products that gently chemically exfoliate are the best way to treat and prevent them. Look for ones that contain salicylic acid and avoid over-exfoliating as this can break the delicate hairs that regrow.”

What’s the best aftercare for a Brazilian wax?

“Avoid any heat treatments afterwards like hot baths/saunas,” This is because freshly waxed skin is more prone to irritation and heat can aggravate the area. Also, waxing causes your pores to open so,  “give the gym a skip as sweating can clog the pores,” leading to ingrown hairs.

So, whether you’re heading on holiday or just want to get groomed, we hope you’re feeling prepped and ready for your next Brazilian wax. Remember, if in doubt, always speak to a professional as they’ll be experts in all things waxing and can offer even more advice on what’s best for you.
