At this moment in time, my lips are currently going through a dry phase. Chapped, split, you name it. I'll be honest, I don't get cracked lips often - but when I do there's always one product that I reach for: the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

A cult favourite and a viral sensation, the K-beauty brand has taken the beauty world by storm. From A-list celebrities such as Sydney Sweeney, Kendall Jenner, Kate Moss, Kaia Gerber and more, the list of celebs endorsing the viral Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask exceeds the length of my arm at this point.

But is it really as good as everyone says? We put the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask through its paces to see if it really goes to work on dry, cracked lips. Here's what a beauty writer had to say about it, along with my honest thoughts.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask: What is it? Where did it come from?

After being launched in 2015 by K-beauty brand, Laneige, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask gained traction in beauty spheres online - especially after the partnership with Sephora in 2017 saw the exclusive debut of the Lip Sleeping Mask in the USA. It wasn't until 2023 when the lip mask became available in the UK, however.

Since then, the Laneige Lip Mask has skyrocketed to viral, cult status on TikTok with influencers, beauty lovers and celebrities raving about the formula. Reviewers have even taken to the comments to praise it as the 'best product that they've ever used on their lips'.

Jam-packed full of lip-loving ingredients, the formula contains minerals and hyaluronic acid to bring back moisture; nourishing shea butter, murumuru butter and coconut oil to deeply hydrate; and a Berry Mix Complex™ containing natural extracts as well as vitamin C for antioxidant protection.

Expert rating:
4.5

Using innovative Moisture Wrap™ technology, the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask cloaks your lips in a protective layer for a visibly softer, plumper and healthier-looking pout. Repair your lips as you sleep and wake up to baby-soft lips the next day with a whole host of scents that are (almost!) good enough to eat.

Shop at: Amazon, ASOS, Beauty Bay, Boots, Cult Beauty, Sephora and Space NK.

But what did I think of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask? Read on for my honest review.

My honest thoughts

In the throes of winter when my lips are contending with cold weather and constant central heating, my lips have the potential to become dry. It's not just winter, though - dehydration, humidity and sun exposure make chapped lips a challenge for most all year round.

There have been times when I've mistakenly used retinol a little too close to my lip line and it's resulted in peeling skin around my lip area. And, admittedly, as someone who doesn't drink enough water, there are times when my lips are left crying out for moisture.

After the viral hype of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask, I thought I'd give the product a go. I purchased the staple Berry flavour last year, but given its range of delicious scents and flavours, I'm looking at giving some of the other variations a go.

The Berry scent carries through to the flavour, too. Trust us on this one, it smells absolutely divine. It applies clear with a glossy finish that gives your lips an enviable glass-like quality. The consistency is thick and balmy in texture - not sticky in the slightest.

I'm someone who has lip filler, so keeping my lips hydrated and in tip-top condition is important. For me, other balms tend to coat the lips but not penetrate the layers of the lip for deep hydration. Like a deep conditioning mask for your hair, I'd describe this as a deep conditioning mask for your lips.

To cut to the chase, is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask actually any good? In short, it's the first lip product that comes to mind and the first I reach for when I'm suffering from sore lips. I've tried cheaper alternatives that come close but, sorry to say, nothing quite beats the original.

How the product was tested

Despite it being advertised as an overnight lip sleeping mask, I've used this product for its intended purpose and during the day when my lips need that extra shot of moisture. I've used it for many months now and would say it's a hydration hero when I notice my lips looking dryer than usual.

It does come with a handy applicator, but it's not something I reach for often - although it is a fabulous added touch. I simply use my finger to slug the product over my lips and let it get to work, both overnight and in the day-to-day.

Below is a picture of a before and after, immediately after applying the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

Chapped lips, be gone. As you can see, my dry, cracked lips are a distant memory after only one use. Obviously, the benefits only continue with repeated use of the product so I'll keep giving my lips a bit of TLC so that they return to their former, once-hydrated selves.

What we loved

Buttery, balmy, hydrating hard-working formula: I love how the Laneige Lip Mask feels balmy and buttery on application instead of feeling sticky. You can feel the formula getting to work as soon as you apply it, as the hydration feels like it's penetrating the layers of your skin instead of just the surface.

A long-lasting product you don't have to reapply: As well as the product being long-lasting on your lips, this means you don't have to constantly reapply it, meaning the pot lasts you ages too. So, you're really getting your money's worth.

Jam-packed full of lip-loving ingredients: Containing all kinds of skin benefits, the nourishing butters and oils work to repair the lips from within. It has added minerals and vitamins for a long-term fix for chapped lips.

What could be better

The premium price point: The only possible thing I could consider as a con is the price point. Other products on the market offer a similar product for less, just take the Boots Berry Lip Sleep Mask 20g, £4.50 and the Grace & Stella Moisturizing Berry Lip Mask, £9.85 for example.

The reason we can justify the price of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is due to the higher-quality ingredients, longer-lasting formula and higher-end packaging. Unlike regular lip balms that need constant reapplication, this thick, overnight treatment is designed to treat your lips from within.

Final verdict

So, is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask really worth the hype? We'll admit the hype for this product is a little crazy, but it really is so good. Its range of scents and flavours is super addictive, and its hydration power goes above and beyond your average drugstore lipbalm. All in all, if you're looking for a hero product to keep chapped lips at bay and you're willing to part with a few extra pennies, then we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

FAQs

Does Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask come with an applicator?

Yes, each Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask comes with its own applicator to apply your overnight balm mess-free. It comes in a stick format with a doe-foot applicator that you swoop into the product and apply on your lips. Afterwards, clean it off and pop it back into its clear, squishy case for easy storage.

Which flavour of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is best?

At this moment in time, the current range of flavours available are: Berry, Cotton Candy Swirl, Gummy Bear, Sweet Candy, Vanilla and Watermelon Pop. However, the brand often releases new, limited-edition flavours as we've seen in previous years during the seasonal periods.

As far as which Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is best? The beauty of it is trying all of the flavours and finding your favourite! The Berry flavour is a repeated staple for the brand, so we'd say this variation is a classic for a reason.

How long do Laneige Lip Masks last? And does the Laneiege Lip Mask expire?

A pot of the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask will easily last you over a year. Yep, a little goes a long way. From our research, we'd estimate the expiration date covers approximately 1 year and 8 months after purchase. Any concerns? Patch test the product on your arm, check the consistency and smell that the product is ok before use.

How much is the Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask?

Price points in the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask differ from £17 to £29 depending on retailers, scents and flavours. Limited-edition flavours are often more expensive due to demand, however generally? It retails at £21 in its current staple range of flavours.

Is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask worth it?

Whether it's worth it? We'd say for what it is, it's pretty expensive. Other alternatives offer similar on the market. However, the hydrating power, delicious range of scents and buttery consistency are something alternatives on the market can't seem to get just right.

Where can you shop the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask on sale?

The Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask is available to shop at various sites, but all flavours may not be available. We've included Lookfantastic in our review as they're the retailer currently stocking the widest variety of scents and flavours. However, some other retailers stock the sought-after mask at a discount. Shop the Laneige Lip Mask on sale below:

Amazon: Has the lip mask in Berry, £18.90, as well as limited-edition highly-sought after flavours Grapefruit and Mint Chocolate right now (although these are more expensive).
ASOS: Has discounts running on the Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask in Berry, £17.
Beauty Bay: The lip mask is available in Berry, £17, Vanilla, £17.85 and Gummy Bear, £17.85.
Boots: On sale in flavours Berry, Candy, Gummy Bear and Vanilla for £17.85.

Who are Laneige and when were they founded?

Launched in 1994, Laneige is a South Korean beauty brand that rose to popularity in Korea in the early 2000s. Its name comes from the French "la neige", which translates to "the snow". In September 2017, Laneige partnered with cosmetics retailer Sephora to relaunch its brand in the United States, with the exclusive debut of the Lip Sleeping Mask.
