We all know the struggle of trying to get the perfect pout.

Using a lip pencil and lipstickjust doesn't always work out how you want it to. With colour fading throughout the day, The lipstick starting to smudge. And just definitely not giving you the perfect pout.

Well a lip primer may be the product that will change your makeup routine.

Whether you want to know what a lip primer actually is, and whether or not it is necessary to use. Here's what you need to know...

What is a lip primer?

Similar to a face primer being used to make your foundation and concealer evenly applied and long-lasting - a lip primer is used before putting on your other lip products to keep it in place.

They come as lip pencils, crayons and lipsticks - so there is something for everyone to try.

Is a lip primer worth adding to your makeup routine?

The short answer to this is yes.

There are a handful of benefits to using a lip primer before applying your lipstick and here's what they are.

  1. They smooth out your lips - where you would find the lip product clings to any dryness or lines, the lip primer helps to smooth those over to give an overall better finish.
  1. No creasing - similar to the first benefit, sometimes you can find you have slight creases in your lips but with using a lip primer it reduces this.
  1. It gives you a long-lasting colour - everyone wants their lip colour to last all day and that is what the lip primer can help with. Not only does it make the colour pop, it stays maintained the whole time it is on your lips.
  1. No more feathering - the worst thing is when you think you have perfected your lipstick, and then you check in the mirror to see it has been smudged. Well the lip primer is your solution to stop this.

How to prep your lips before applying

1) Exfoliate - this will improve how long the lip colour lasts on your lips. It will remove dry skin from the lips, smoothing them ready to moisturise.

2) Moisturise - use a lip balm to hydrate your lips to keep them moisturised and smooth. If you don't have a lip balm then move on to step three, a lip balm can improve the base of your lips but is not necessary.

3) Prime - the essential part of your routine. Apply a thin layer of lip primer all over your lips to create a base for your lip colour. Ready to give you the perfect pout.

4) Line lips - use a lip liner to follow the edge of your lip, this will help stop feathering.

5) Apply lip product - with your lip colour fill in your lips between the lines to keep it neat.

6) Blot - finally gently blot your lips with some tissue to remove any excess product.
