Q: Sometimes when my boyfriend gives me oral sex, he says my clitoris disappears and he can’t find it. It doesn’t feel any different my end, but I think it freaks him out a bit. Why does this happen and is it a bad thing? Tracy, by email

A: Just like men’s testicles do a disappearing act close to orgasm (the testes need to be retracted in order for him to come), the clitoris often hides under the clitoral hood just before reaching climax.

Just because it retracts in this way, doesn’t mean it will stop you climaxing and it’s definitely nothing to worry about. Your clitoris may also hide under the hood when over-stimulated, so if you feel like he’s overdoing things a bit down there during sex, get him to use a softer, gentler touch and it might well make a reappearance.
