OPINION: Why we shouldn’t judge the Beckhams for allowing Harper, 4, to use a dummy

Despite having raised four children together, David and Victoria Beckham have come under fire for letting four-year-old daughter Harper Seven, use a dummy.

When Victoria, 41, stepped out in LA last week with Harper, experts were outraged to see that the toddler had a dummy, and even claimed her parents were harming her by allowing the use of one.

But we shouldn't be judging David, 40, and Victoria because of this. First of all, Victoria gave birth to her first child in 1999 – that's 16 years of parenting experience, I'm sure she knows what she's doing by now.

Despite this, a UK newspaper published some quotes from a so called expert who insisted that, by allowing Harper to get some comfort from her dummy, Victoria was encouraging her to be a mute.

The 'expert' told them: "Harper is being carried by her mother, so she doesn't need the comfort of the dummy.

"[The use of a dummy] can also affect speech development, because so many mothers stick a dummy in their toddler's mouth just to shut the toddler up. The toddler just sits there sucking away on its dummy and doesn't talk or do anything.

"If a mother allows her toddler to have a dummy in her mouth for large parts of the day, she will definitely stunt her speech development."

This brings me on to my next point: nobody, except Victoria and David, knows how long Harper spends with her pacifier.

She is the daughter of one of the most photographed couples in the world, perhaps the dummy is simply a source of comfort as they regularly battle their way through the paparazzi, and she pops it out as soon as she gets to the safety of the car or their home.

The 'expert' also hysterically harped on about how the use of a pacifier could 'push the teeth forward and leave them misaligned'.

It was recently reported that Victoria is worth £210m so I'm sure she can afford a good orthodontist for Harper should her teeth become misaligned, if she should want to. But why is this even an issue?

DAVID BECKHAM ON PARENTING: "WE WANT THE CHILDREN BROUGHT UP LIKE WE WERE"

All that statement is suggesting is it is wrong for a child to have wonky teeth. Why are we judging children now?

But, more importantly, nobody has the right to tell David and Victoria how to bring up their daughter. Their three boys, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, always come across as polite, well-mannered and grounded, despite the world they come from.

You rarely see the two of them without their children, who always look loved and cared for and seem very happy. Is this not the most important thing?

So what if Harper still occasionally users her pacifier – as a Twitter user so rightly put it: "As long as she doesn't graduate with it, who cares?"

Should the Beckhams be judged for allowing Harper to use a dummy?
