How soon after having a baby can you have sex again? I’m feeling rather exhausted and not really up for it, but my partner is giving me strong hints!

Katie, by email

I generally advise women not to start having sex until after the postnatal check-up, which usually takes place about six weeks after the birth. But if you have needed stitches and you are still sore then you will not be ready even then. If you do get the all-clear, it’s a good idea to use plenty of extra lubrication to make things more comfortable.

Don’t expect things to get straight back to normal as childbirth most definitely does affect your sex life. You will be experiencing hormone changes and emotional stresses and very few women feel sexy until a long time after they have given birth. This may take six months or so to sort itself out so be prepared, and tell your partner to be patient.

Remember, it is your choice when you start.
