My mum and gran suffered with breast cancer – although I’m only in my early 30s, I’m worried I might get it too. What can I do to lessen my chances?
Jess, via email
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and women have a one in eight chance of developing it. Risk increases with age. We don’t know what the exact causes are, but we do know some things – known as “risk factors” – can affect the likelihood of getting cancer. Genetics can play a part, but for most people, having a relative with breast cancer does not increase their risk. Your GP can go through your family history and work out whether you may be more likely to develop it.
Other risk factors include taking the Pill, being overweight and drinking more than the recommended daily amount of alcohol.
Having one or more risk factors does not necessarily mean you will develop breast cancer. It’s important to live a healthy lifestyle and to check for new lumps or changes in your breasts on a monthly basis. Check your breasts
all over (including the upper chest and armpits) to look for anything unusual, especially any changes in shape or texture. See your doctor
if there’s anything you’re unsure about.
