I often get urine infections after sex. Do you know why this is and how can I stop them?

Dr Christian says: Cystitis – an inflammation in the bladder – after sex is a well-known problem and is sometimes called “honeymoon cystitis” for obvious reasons. Sometimes, the bladder gets irritated by sexual activity due to bruising, which can cause symptoms that seem like an infection, but no bacteria is actually present. However, often there is an infection, usually because bacteria has been transferred to the urethra – the tube that connects the bladder to the genitals – during sex. Some women find cystitis flares up more readily in certain sexual positions, so it’s worth experimenting to find out how best to avoid that. Long sex sessions and lack of lubrication can also trigger it. Try to completely empty your bladder when you go to the loo and make sure you pee after sex, too.
