Q: I’m pregnant but thinking about having an abortion – will it affect my chances of having babies in the future? And how soon can I have sex afterwards?

Lianne, by email

A: If your abortion is performed relatively early, you may bleed a little for a few weeks. It’s probably best that you avoid having sex for at least two weeks afterwards, as there could be a risk of infection. Your clinic should give you a number to call if you have any concerns.

You should also go for a follow-up appointment a few weeks afterwards.
I hope you have the support of your partner or a friend, as it’s possible you may experience some emotional problems after an abortion – do see your GP if you feel you need to.

There’s no reason why having a termination should affect your fertility if there are no complications but, if you become pregnant in the future, you may have a slightly increased risk of miscarriage or the baby being born early.
