My GP wants to prescribe me tablets for my blood pressure, but I’d prefer to take herbal remedies. My friends say I’m mad – what do you think?

Dr Christian says; It is a bit of a misconception that because something is “natural” it is safe – it isn’t always. Many herbs are toxic, have just as many side effects as prescription medicines and the amount of active ingredients that certain preparations say they contain can be far from accurate.
Many people turn to herbal remedies because conventional medicines have not worked, or the conditions they suffer from cannot be cured. But I find it strange when patients are rightly wary of taking prescription drugs, but don’t apply the same caution to taking complementary medicines.
Laboratory-made drugs come in precise doses, in precise formulations that can be easily controlled. The same cannot be said for herbal remedies – the strength of these products can vary depending on when the plants were harvested, the length of time they were stored or the methods of preparation and extraction.
I’d advise you go back to your GP and discuss your concerns about the pills they prescribed, as they may be able to put your mind at rest. Also, check with your GP before taking any herbal remedies, to discuss any potential side effects.
