Q: I had a tattoo done when I was younger and I really hate it now. Can I get it removed on the NHS?

Jen, by email

A: I’m afraid to say that you are unlikely to get this done for you on the NHS – resources are limited and this would not be considered a priority. It is classed as surgery for cosmetic reasons, and unless your doctor decides it is causing you significant distress or serious mental health problems – at which point they would refer you on for further assessment – you will need to pay for private treatment.

This would involve either surgery to remove the area of skin with the tattoo on (and this will leave a scar) or by using lasers. Several sessions of laser treatment will be required – the cost and success of the treatment will vary hugely depending on the size of the tattoo and colours used.

Be prepared for the fact that your tattoo may simply fade but not disappear completely.
