Q: I have really large breasts that give me a lot of pain.

My GP has told me to wait before doing anything as I’m only 18, but are they really likely to get smaller? Anna, by email

A: Large breasts can be a real handicap for women – as well as potentially making you self-conscious, they can cause physical problems, too. Your posture can be affected and you may have aching muscles in your chest and shoulders.

A good supportive bra can help, but if your breasts are very heavy, the bra straps can cut into your shoulders. Your breasts’ shape and size will change throughout your life and you may feel a tension and swelling in them before your period is due, but it is very unlikely they will decrease to a size you are more comfortable with.

If they are really a problem, I suggest you plead a stronger case with your GP, explaining exactly how they make your life difficult – you may be considered for a reduction on the NHS if your breasts are causing you psychological distress or physical problems.
