But a misguided tweet intended to ‘welcome the team home’ has outraged many - with some saying it proves how little has changed in the attitude to women’s sport.

The official England football Twitter wrote: ‘Our #Lionesses go back to being mothers, partners and daughters today, but they have tame on another title - heroes.’

However the tweet was quickly criticised for being ‘sexist’ and ‘old fashioned’ with many taking to the social media site to poke fun at the message.

The Barry Horns wrote: ‘Let’s all laugh at this patronising and sexist comment by #England’s @FA. There’s a pile of ironing over there, luv!’

Wheras Robert Perry wrote: ‘It’s just so patronising. It shows what we already know - that the FA thinks women’s football is not a ‘real’ sport.’
