Abu Azmi, from India's Socialist Party, said he wanted women who were raped to be put to death along with their attackers.
He made the shocking admission to NDTV news, saying: 'Rape is punishable by hanging in Islam but here, nothing happens to women, only to men.'
'Any woman if, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged.'
'Both should be hanged. It shouldn't be allowed even if a woman goes by consent.'
And Azmi is not alone in his beliefs, with the party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav also arguing that women often cry rape after a fight, and that men should be forgiven for their indiscretion because 'boys will be boys.'
He added that if he is elected prime minister he would abolish the death penalty for rapists.
