Women who drink alcohol when pregnant should be prosecuted, say campaigners

Campaigners are calling for drinking excessively whilst pregnant to become a crime, meaning women who do so could face jail time.

Figures from the Department of Health show in total around one in 100 babies are born with alcohol related disorders, and in the past three years there has been a 50% rise in Foetal Alcohol Syndrome.

These figures revealed 313 babies in 2012-2013 were damaged from being exposed to alcohol whilst in the womb.

Dr Raja Mukherjee warned mothers not to binge-drink, but added that it is safe to have the recommended amount for pregnant women.

'That doesn't mean that people who've drunk a little bit have harmed their child, most people won't have done, but if you want to guarantee safety and you want to guarantee no risk then no alcohol is the best way forward'

Sue Brett, a mother who adopted a child with FAS, agrees with the campaign.

'If you want to guarantee safety and you want to guarantee no risk then no alcohol is the best way forward'

'It should be to abstain from alcohol throughout pregnancy. You can't make it a criminal offence if you are still legally saying this is a safe amount to drink or you can drink. It needs to be clear from the start that you can't drink.'

Her adopted son Glenn, 15, had a mother who drank excessively throughout pregnancy. He has the mental age of four, physical disabilities and has to wear nappies and be fed through a tube.

However the charity for FAS, NOFAS-UK, doesn't think prosecution is the answer, and thinks women who are alcoholics should be given support instead.

'[They] should be given support and should be given information so they know there's a chance they could harm another life.'

The UK Chief Medical Officers’ advice to women on the issue is:

'Women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should avoid alcohol altogether. However, if they do choose to drink, to minimise the risk to the baby, we recommend they should not drink more than 1-2 units once or twice a week and should not get drunk.'
