Woman sacked ‘for having butterfly tattoo’ on her foot

A woman was fired from her job as the tattoo of a butterfly on her foot didn’t comply with company regulations, it has been reported.

Jo Perkins, 38, worked as a procurement consultant for company Salisbury FM Ltd before she had her position terminated when her tattoo clashed with a new policy.

She said that despite the fact that she was often praised during her five months at the company for her ‘outstanding’ work, and her job didn’t involve coming into contact with the public, the firms new ‘no tattoo’ rule is the reason she was forced to leave.

Speaking to a UK newspaper, Jo said: “I’ve been a procurement consultant for years and I’ve worked for many high-level companies in my time. But never have I heard anything as ridiculous as this.”

According to Jo, she arrived at work this week only to be escorted from the premises by managers there – although the company denies this.

Now Jo is considering legal action against her former employers. She said: “I am consulting a solicitor, on behalf of all professionals with tattoos, to see if this action constitutes discrimination under inclusion and diversity laws.”

But the company have denied having any ban on tattoos in place, with the chief executive Ed Swales saying: “Salisbury’s company policy is that tattoos should not be visible while at work.

“The policy is simply one of covering tattoos and not a ban on tattoos. The policy is in place to ensure our employees and contractors project the professional image we want our customers to see in Salisbury. She made no effort to comply with the policy.”
