She went into labour at her home in Pitsea, Essex, and while her partner was upstairs getting their things for the hospital, five masked men broke in.

While the unnamed woman, 22, was having contractions she was beaten with a baseball bat and had her face slashed with a knife.

The couple had a two-year-old child asleep upstairs.

Her 32-year-old partner, who also wishes to remain unnamed, told the Evening Echo: “My partner’s contractions were about six minutes apart so I went upstairs to get her hospital bag and to phone the baby sitter to come and look after our two-year-old.

“The next thing I heard a loud smash – like a fish tank shattering. My partner was screaming my name and I just heard these men shouting something like, ‘where’s the money? Give us the money!’.”

The man confronted the gang, jumping in front of them to protect his distressed partner.

Despite the traumatic experience, thankfully the woman gave birth to a healthy baby.

Basildon CID are now searching for the gang, who made away with around £60 in cash, a mobile phone and an iPad.

Three of the men wore balaclavas, one of the unmasked was white and the other mixed race.

If you have any information you should call Basildon CID.
