The 28-year-old arranged to meet the man in a restaurant in Sydney, Australia, before he invited several of his friends along to join them.
WHY I NEVER TOLD ANYONE ABOUT MY RAPE
A short while later, the woman described feeling dizzy and numb - and found herself at an unknown property in the suburbs of the city.
The next morning, the New Zealand national, who was in Sydney on business, managed to leave the property and tell her colleagues what had happened.
Police have now issued a warning for online daters to be wary.
BBC FORCED TO DEFEND RAPE STORYLINE
‘It’s absolutely vital that people using dating websites and apps remember that how a person portraits themselves on the internet can be very different from their real life persona,’ said Detective Inspector Haddow.
‘We strongly advise people that if they decide to meet a person they have been introduced to via the internet, then ensure the meeting is in a public place and take a friend along with you.’
‘Having a friend there ensures that one of you can always keep an eye on your drink, and you have someone to turn to who can help you out should you feel threatened or uncomfortable.’
Detective Haddow said failing this, you should keep a friend updated with your whereabouts and how the evening is going.
The man in question is described as being of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance.
News of the rape comes just months after another New Zealand national fell to her death from a Brisbane balcony, after meeting up with Australian Gable Tostee via Tinder.
