Onlookers have told of their horror when a woman appeared to ‘spontaneously combust’.

People in a park witnessed the incident, which happened on Monday night, close to where the woman was relaxing on a bench.

Scientists believe spontaneous combustion – where the body goes up in flames without warning – could be caused by a number of factors, including alcohol consumption and how close they are to a possible ignition source.

Incredibly the woman survived and is now in a critical condition in hospital. Eyewitnesses explained how, seemingly with no warning, the woman – thought to be in her 40s – was suddenly overcome by flames.

A man is said to have ran over and used his body to extinguish them while other onlookers called the emergency services.

She’s now believed to be in a specialist hospital where she is receiving treatment.

The woman is well known in the area and now the locals of Flensburg, Germany, are praying she pulls through.
