Carol Bell, who was walking with the aid of a walker, was crossing the street early yesterday morning in Brooklyn, New York, when she was hit.
The driver, Paul Roper, was making a turn when he hit the 70-year-old head on, with witnesses saying she was ‘cut in half’ by the crash.
‘I tried to help her but she was too bloody,’ said witness Ramon Garcia.
‘There was so much blood.’
Shockingly, the driver failed to stop after the crash, leaving Bell to die in the middle of the street.
‘He just kept going,’ said the witness.
‘It’s a big machine…I guess you don’t feel something like that.’
Police later arrested the driver for leaving the scene of an accident, plus other charges.
The Transit Workers Union President said: ‘This is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to all family and friends.’
‘We will closely follow the investigation, which is in a very early stage.’
The bus was out of service and on the way back to the depot when Bell was struck.
