According to reports, Elaine Williams posted an advert on the online shopping site Craigslist, urging mothers to drop their "unwanted babies in a baby box" at her home in Georgia, USA.

It demanded that the baby’s birth certificate and health record be placed in the box as well, and insisted that only the baby’s legal guardian could place the box there.

Despite promising a “loving, caring and forever home” for unwanted newborns, the advert grimly warned that the same love would not be extended towards a disabled child.

It read: “A DISABLED CHILD MAY NOT be placed in the baby boy. If your baby is disabled, you will need to go to another location.”

Police arrested the 47-year-old after being alerted by someone who had spotted the advert, which has since been removed from the website.

When questioned over her actions, Williams apparently told police that "her daughter wanted a baby and would get one with or without her help, so she decided to help".

Williams, along with her unnamed daughter, has been charged with "unlawful advertisement and inducement for adoption of children”.

She remains in police custody.
