Claire Wineland, who has been living with the chronic illness her whole life, was placed in a medically induced coma five years ago after a lung infection became life threatening.
And now in a fascinating video, the inspirational teen, who keeps her large following updated through her blog and social networks, has shed some light on what it feels like to be a comatose state.
According to Claire, she was fully aware of what was going on around her during the two week coma, but that everything came through a strange filter.
She describes how, at one point, she could hear family members talking around her but in her head she was at a summer camp surrounded by other young girls - who were gossiping about someone else.
Similarly, when Claire would be placed in uncomfortable positions for medical examinations, her brain would make up reasons why she was in that position - like being stuck in a hammock, for instance.
The most interesting thing we found about Claire’s experience is that she spent a lot of her coma time ‘in Alaska’ - a place she had never been, nor wanted to go to.
‘It was so beautiful’ she said. ‘It was like pine trees and coves and I would sit there and stare at the most beautiful scenery for hours and hours.’
Turns out - Claire was getting ice-packed the entire time due to her high fever, hence her brain’s decision to take her to Alaska.
Claire also explained how when someone she liked was talking she would be somewhere beautiful and welcoming, whereas if it was someone unknown, she would be somewhere strange and scary.
‘It showed me how the world can be manipulated in our minds.’
That’s just about the most deep thing we’ve read today…
