Little Edwin Davies, who was just 15-months-old, was enjoying his breakfast when his mother, Janice, heard her 51-year-old husband calling for her help.
She stepped outside to help with some cattle near the family's isolated farmhouse in Wales.
Janice was gone for just "five or ten minutes" - but, in that short time, tragedy struck.
Edwin had slipped forwards on a vinyl seat pad put into his highchair.
The baby's head became stuck in the gap between his seat and the table, cutting off his air supply.
When Janice returned, she found him unconscious and unresponsive.
A trained nurse, she quickly raised the alarm and tried to resuscitate Edwin herself, but to no avail.
An air ambulance arrived at the family's home in the rural community in Southgate, Aberystwyth, and airlifted Edwin 150 miles to a specialist unit at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, where doctors battled in vain to save his life.
The tiny tot tragically died.
The cause of death was found to be accidental asphyxiation - and the community have rallied behind Janice and Colin, who have two other children.
Speaking about the incident with South Wales Evening Post, their local mayor said: "Edwin's death was a shock to everyone.
"It has affected the whole community, but everyone is behind them and supporting them, as a mother you really feel it, it's absolutely terrible.
"It's just so tragic and an accident can happen to anyone. All our thoughts are with them."
