68-year-old Stan Beaton kept his late wife Ruby’s voice recorded on an old answering machine message to comfort him throughout his grief.

When Virgin Media updated Stan’s answering machine, the voice recording appeared to have been wiped much to the widower’s distress.

Stan contacted the telephone operator, and they soon made it their message to retrieve the message.

A radio station played the tape back to Stan, and he broke down with emotion and relief.

He told BBC Radio Leeds upon hearing the tape: In December I learned that it had disappeared. I just could not tell people how it affected me at that time. It really did devastate me…

“They’ve made this old age pensioner extremely happy. It’s just a wonderful, wonderful sound that I thought was lost forever.”
