Paul Smart stabbed his wife Angela Smeaton to death, just hours after she attended the funeral of her brother.

The 49-year-old brutally knifed Smeaton 12 times in the face, neck and arm, before phoning 999 and telling them what he had done.

Smart said: ‘I’ve just killed my wife who I’ve been with for 29 years. It’s f***ing disgraceful.’

Despite claiming during his trial that he had acted in self defence, the Judge riled: ‘She did not have the knife. It was you that picked up that knife, that fearsome knife, and you used it to deadly effect’

During the 999 call, Smart also tried to determine if his wife was alive or dead.

‘I don’t know. I think it was in the neck. I think she is not going to survive, there is that much blood.’

The operator then asked Smart if there are any signs of life, to which he replied casually that she 'might be breathing or moving'.

Paul is then heard going to the bathroom while on the phone to the operator, even complaining that he ‘can’t do his trousers up’ with one hand.

Smart had a history of domestic abuse and violence, and had once pinned his partner to a wall while holding a knife.

Paul was sentenced to life in prison.
