After some good luck on the weather front these past two weeks, rain and gales have hit the UK this week - and they’re not going anywhere soon.

Heavy downpours are expected this week, with the bad weather lasting into next weekend and beyond.

The UK enjoyed sunnier weather last week

Thunderstorms arrived in the South over the weekend, replacing Saturday’s sunshine with rain and wind.

And on Monday, most of the country woke up to drizzly weather, with temperatures dropping to around 15C in some places.

Met Office forecaster Steven Keates said: ‘It is going to be a fairly miserable start to the week and very changeable for most with the northern half of Scotland getting the brightest weather.’

But far from this being the end of the summer - forecasters are predicting ‘very warm’ conditions for later in July, with the 25th being tipped for a high point of the summer.
