Happens to the best of us, right?
Do you ever see a story so ludicrous circulating online and just sit back thinking 'no, this can’t possibly be true'. That was everyone’s reaction last night when one Twitter user shared an unbelievable story about a particularly expensive first date.
Sam White, a journalist, told the story in one quick tweet that has since received over 5000 likes and hundreds of responses of bewilderment. According to him, through a friend of a friend, a woman visited The Shard for a first date and naturally, ordered a bottle of wine.

Reading the price on the menu as £50, she subsequently ordered two more bottles over the course of the date (sounds like it was either going excellently or terribly) only to find out that each bottle was actually £5000.
That’s right, the woman had wracked up a bill of £15,000 just on wine at The Shard. Fifteen. Thousand. Pounds. Of course, she couldn’t pay the eye-wateringly large bill there and then, and so was forced to set up a direct debit to The Shard to pay it off in instalments. ‘How long could a £15,000 direct debit last?’, I hear you scream. 10 years. That’s right. Ten. Whole. Years.
Naturally, the story has been met with more than a few cynical responses. ‘1. Nobody drinks three bottles of wine on a first date 2. No waiter lets you run up £1500 of debt without a word 3. I don’t think this actually happened,’ one Twitter user replied. Others have opted for the much-loved meme response of ‘Sure Jan’.
‘People are getting genuinely angry that this story I was told and just recalled here might not be true,’ White added in response – with at least two other users confirming that actually, they know the woman personally and it is true.
So of course, we approached The Shard for comment and Real Estate Management UK Ltd -the asset management that runs The Shard - gave the following statement:
'Real Estate Management UK Ltd has spoken to the restaurant and bar operators within The Shard all of whom have confirmed this alleged incident did not happen on their premises.'

So it seems that many of us have fallen foul to the age old urban legend - something that is only exasperated by social media these days. Honestly we're quite sad. Because, this story is hilarious. Imagine being the woman whom can’t buy a house because of your wine debts. At least it’s something more interesting than student debt like the rest of us. ‘Oh sorry, I can’t go on holiday this year, drank too much wine at The Shard’, it’s genius.
She could've had a book deal, or a TV show that would eventually enable her to pay off the debt. Now wouldn't that have been a happy ending we could all get on board with?
