18-year-old Veronica Carrera Chaparro was arrested following the birth of the child in November last year.
The Mirror reported that the girl fell pregnant in February last year and her boyfriend revealed the news to her family despite her pleas to keep it a secret.
The teenager’s mother and sister were also arrested on suspicion of aiding the sale of the unborn baby.
The police claim that the girl’s mother, 42-year-old Angela Chaparro and her 24-year-old sister Daniela Perez gave her three options, to ‘sell it, abort it, or give it up for adoption.’
With the help of her family, Veronica allegedly advertised her unborn child on Facebook and received interest from several potential ‘buyers,’ including a couple who reportedly offered to pay £1,135 in formal registration fees.
The buyer then handed over 60,000 pesos, the equivalent of £68, to the mother, according to a Chilean newspaper.
The Judge overseeing the case described it as ‘very serious’ as the women appeared in court over the weekend.
Those who attempted to buy the child have also been arrested and are set to appear in court this week.
Chilean police say that taking bringing the mother to justice could prove difficult as in Chile it is ‘not a crime to offer over the delivery of a newborn over the internet, even though financial compensation is offered to.’
The case is still ongoing.
