Kallum Jeavons, 19, stole a laptop, phone, Tesco Clubcard and DVDs worth a £1,000 from an elderly couple as they slept.
"The actions of your mother were commendable"
But, when his mother uncovered the Tesco Clubcard - which had been printed with one of the victims' names - in their Newport home, she realised what her son had done.
The brave mum took the card to the police, which resulted in her son's arrest.
Jeavons confessed to burglary and was sentenced to a year in prison.
Judge John Jenkins QC, who was presiding over the trial, made sure to praise the burglar's mum for her actions.
He said: "The actions of your mother were commendable.”
It's not the first time a mother has shopped her son to the police; in October 2013, one mum was forced to turn her son in after discovering he had been involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident.
And, in 2012, a 20-year-old Missouri man was charged with planning a mass shooting at either a screening of the latest Twilight movie or a local Walmart after his mother place a call to police.
