Wasila Tasi’u, 14, has been charged with poisoning her 35-year-old husband after being married off by her parents.

The Nigerian teenager may now be sentenced to death if found guilty of murdering her husband.

According to reports, Wasila’s lawyer is asking that the trial be conducted in juvenile court due to her young age.

The Nigerian authorities may still try her as an adult since there us no clear age limit for someone to be tried as an adult.

The lead prosecutor in the case has told reporters that he will seek the death penalty if she is tried as an adult.

Activists campaigning for the teenager claim that Wasila was most likely raped by her husband, and rather than go on trial for murder she should be rehabilitated for the abuse that she has had to suffer in the lead up to and during her forced marriage.

Nigeria has not executed anyone under the age of 17 since 1997.

Wasila’s story comes following a woman in the Middle East being sentenced to death after killing a man who raped her.
