Alexandria Vera, a 24-year-old teacher in Texas, alleges she fell pregnant after months of daily sex with an eighth grade student assigned to her English class.
Court documents claim that the parents of the 13-year-old knew about the pair’s involvement and were ‘accepting of the relationship’, as well as supportive and even ‘excited’ once the pregnancy was revealed to them.
However when the 24-year-old teacher was questioned by Child Protection Services in February of this year, she allegedly denied any relationship and terminated the pregnancy.
The pair had a sexual relationship that Vera admitted lasted five months, during which time suspicions began to be raised.
A police warrant was put out for her arrest and Vera went on the run. She later turned herself in to the authorities in Montgomery County on Wednesday.
According to The Daily Mail, Vera went to court on Friday, where a judge ruled that she is to have no contact with under-seventeens – including the complainant – and she must wear a GPS monitor. Vera is also under curfew at her home between 8pm and 7am.
Her next court appearance will be in July.
The case has sparked debate over Texas’ record levels of inappropriate relationships being reported between teachers and students, with numerous news outlets finding that the Texas Education Agency reported the launch of 162 investigations between September 2015 and May 2016 alone.
