Police in Houston are desperately trying to figure out why a man stabbed a 3-year-old boy who was playing outside at an apartment complex in America.

The investigating officers have said that the child was playing in a common area of the apartment complex when Jose Guillermo Molina, 21, walked up behind him.

Speaking with KHOU.com, the victim’s shocked mother said Molina grabbed her son and threw him to the floor, then put his knee on his back and started to stab him with a kitchen knife.

The little boy, thankfully, survived the assault; he had to get two stitches, is out of the hospital and is now recovering.

The boy’s mother said she has "no idea" why anyone would want to hurt her son.

Molina, who lives in the same apartment building as the little boy he attacked, was arrested a short time later at a shopping centre not far from the victim's home.

He has been charged with felony injury to a child.
