A street in China has assigned Smart phone users their own lane on the pavement to avoid collisions between pedestrians.

The lane is designed for those who insist on using their smart phones as they walk and risk walking into other people.

Paint across the pavement labels the lane for those who wish to multi-task, reading: "Cell phones - walk in this lane at your own risk."

A spokesperson for a company working for the authorities in Chongquing City told Sky News: "There are lots of elderly people and children in our street, and walking with your cellphone may cause unnecessary collisions here."

According to a study by the University of Washington in 2012, one in three smart phone users admit becoming distracted by their phones whilst walking down the street and crossing the road.

According to the US department of transportation, distractions from smart phones have also contributed to an increase in pedestrian accidents and deaths.

Taiwan went one further than China, and imposed fines on those who used their phones whilst crossing the street. The law came into place after a woman was killed whilst using her mobile device this year.

Unfortunately for Chongquin City, the seemingly genius idea may have backfired on officials as tourists have reportedly been ‘clogging’ up the street as they crowd around to snap pictures of the ‘cellphone lane’.
