A baby was blinded following a sickening attack by a man who was supposed to be caring for her.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard how Ross Dunn, 28, was looking after the four-week-old baby, who’s now almost two years old, while her mum was out. But, instead of caring for her, he tried to kill her.

Dunn, who admitted to having an anger problem, shook the tiny baby – who cannot be named for legal reasons – and hit her body onto a hard surface. She was left with a fractured skull, a broken leg and is now registered blind.

Speaking in court, her mother said: “She has been left with very severe lifelong disabilities. She is not mobile. She is very floppy like a small baby. She will likely never stand, walk, even sit by herself.”

Dunn denied trying to murder her at a flat in Edinburgh in November 2013 but was yesterday found guilty. He was also convicted of failing to tell doctors how she came about her injuries and for failing to seek medical attention in time.

Prosecutor Bruce Erroch said: “A four-week-old baby appeared to be perfectly well when her mother left her to be looked after by Dunn.

“During the few hours she was away something happened to the baby as a consequences of which she suffered life-threatening injuries and has been left profoundly disabled.”

Sentencing has been deferred as the court wait for reports and Dunn has been remanded in custody.
