The Aspire Assist system works by inserting a silicone tube into the abdomen, then pumping food into a bag, which can then be flushed away.

It’s claimed the system – which has recently launched in the UK - has helped hundreds of patients in the US lose weight but experts have slammed it for allowing people to overeat without addressing the root cause of their obesity.

Patients undergo a 15 minute operation and once the pump has been fitted, almost a third of their food is undigested.
