The trailer for the eagerly anticipated season premiere shows Sherlock seemingly returning from the dead and preparing to surprise his partner, John Watson. Watson is heard saying to Sherlock upon his return: ‘I don't care how you faked it, I just want to know why.’

Sherlock shocked fans when he appeared to have died in the last series before it was revealed he had faked his own death.

The trailer lets us in on a new plot twist revealing that in Sherlock’s absence his base with Watson on Baker Street has ceased. The new series looks like it will involve Sherlock questioning his place in the city he was once so familiar with.

He is heard saying: ‘I need to get to know London again… breathe it in.’

It looks like Sherlock will be kept busy fighting crime as he tries to find the clues to piece back together the puzzle he left behind after his 'death.'

Though the trailer reveals clues to the plot of the new series, it fails to answer the question all fans are asking: how did Sherlock fake his own death, and furthermore, survive the fall? We can start to piece together the clues when Sherlock returns to us once more next month!

Sherlock season 3 premieres on BBC 1 New Year's Day at 9pm.
