Celebrations are taking place across the world as the Supreme Court ruled that same sex marriage is a legal right across the US.

The ruling means that the 14 states with bans on same sex marriage will no longer be able to enforce them. Many couples in states which had the ban, including Georgia, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, rushed to marry on Friday after the news was announced.

Speaking about the ruling, President Obama said the news was a “victory for America,” before adding: "When all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.”

Celebrities shared their happiness at the news on social media. Khloe Kardashian told her Instagram followers “Love wins!! Love is love!!!” while Ellen Page wrote: “Wow. So moved to hear such amazing news. What a beautiful day.

Grateful to those who have worked so tirelessly for equality.”

On Twitter #LoveWins (with a super cute rainbow coloured heart emoji) trended for hours.

Many now hope that other countries, including Northern Ireland, will follow in America’s footsteps.
