Joanne Latham, 38, died in Woodhill prison in Milton Keynes last Friday, after apparently taking her own life.

Her death comes just weeks after another transgender woman, Vicky Thompson, was found dead in Armley prison near Leeds.

Joanne, who was serving sentences for attempted murder, was housed in the close supervision centre - which is an area reserved for the most dangerous and vulnerable prisoners.

According to reports, Latham had not requested a move to a Women’s prison, though there are apparently no CSCs for women in England.

Latham was found hanging by a prison officer in the early hours of Friday morning, after barricading the door of her cell and making sure the observation panel was obscured.

The 38-year-old was sentenced in 2001, but then handed further life sentences in 2007 and 2011 for attempted murders.
