Outraged parents have criticised a school after students were taken on a trip to a sex shop reportedly without their permission.

Students at the Gaia Democratic School were taken to Smitten Kitten in Minneapolis, a shop that describes itself as “a progressive sex toy store for people of all genders and orientations”.

The teenagers were greeted with information about sex toys, BDSM, lubricant and pornograpahy.

According to reports some of the youngsters took away condoms after learning about safe sex.

Director of the school Starri Hedges told the Star Tribune that she thought the trip was a ‘beautiful’ experience for the students.

Students were required to take a sex ed class

Hedges said: "What I saw happening on our trip, I thought it was beautiful because kids could talk to these sex educators without any shame, without any fear.”

She also added that the youngsters could only go to the sex shop after attending a sex education class.

Parents of the students have since complained that they weren’t consulted about the trip beforehand.

Hedges since admitted that she "didn't communicate well enough with parents ahead of time."

According to ABC News, however, the school may have broken rules that require youngsters under the age of 18 to be protected from "sexually provocative written, photographic, printed, sound, or published materials deemed harmful to minors."
