We were all horrified when Cadbury’s decided to change the recipe of its creme eggs last year.

Gone were the thick, creamy and chocolatey Cadbury Dairy Milk shells - and, in their place, a cheaper alternative which left a bitter taste in the mouths of fans everywhere.

What happened next was so unbelievably British, it’s almost unreal; the country embarked upon a boycott against thee creme egg pretenders.

And it seems as if their actions have had a SERIOUSLY big effect on creme egg sales.

Are you ready for this?

Sales of creme eggs lost more than £6million over Easter compared to the year before, according to analysts.

As a result the formerly British firm, bought out by American company Kraft in 2010 for £11.5billion, saw its market share fall from 42 per cent to 40 per cent.

One former Creme Egg fan commented: “Serves them right! Why change something that worked fine in the first place?!

“This is what happens when an American cheese company try to run a British chocolate company #‎somuchfail”

And she wasn’t the only one to crow over the declining sales, either.

In fact, #cremeegggate seems to have sparked an overwhelming number of responses from chocoholics on Twitter.

All of them have boycotted the new egg. All of them are very happy to see that their decision has had such a devastating effect on Creme Egg sales.

And, more importantly, all of them have expressed their opinions in a hilarious and eloquent manner on social media.

Check it out:

Yikes - the people really aren’t happy, are they?

Despite this, Claire Low, a spokesperson for the company in charge of the new creme egg recipe, insists that the complaints are unwarranted.

She said: “The fundamentals of Cadbury Creme Egg remain exactly the same.

“It’s simply not the case that Creme Egg has always been made with Cadbury Dairy Milk.”

She added that this year’s early Easter means recovering sales will be a tall order.

“We are aware shorter seasons can be challenging,” she said.

“To strengthen our positioning, we will continue to invest in power brands, launching new seasonal products and a brand new Easter pack design.”

Hmm.

We’re not so sure new packaging will have the desired effect.

After all, it’s already been proven that the Brits hate one thing above all else; change!
