The mother-of-eight, who has a website dedicated to animals she has killed across Africa and America, uses a bow and arrow to kill her prey.

Describing her passion for hunting on her website, Rebecca Francis unashamedly admits: "We hunt elk and deer every year without fail, even through pregnancy, and nursing babies. Our hunting trips are self-guided.

"I prefer bowhunting, and the animals I have taken with a bow include: a 10 1/2 ft. brown bear, black bear, shiras moose, alaskan moose, dall sheep, stone sheep, desert bighorn ram, rocky mountain bighorn ram, mule deer, whitetail deer, elk, mountain goat, antelope, arapawa ram, kudu, zebra, black wildebeest, giraffe, springbuck, blesbuck, lynx, badger, and squirrel. I have also taken many of the same species and more with a rifle."

However she has now found an enemy in the form of Ricky Gervais - and he has inspired many to stand up against the huntress.

The comedian, disgusted after finding a photo of Francis smiling as she lay next to a dying giraffe, shared the image on his Twitter newsfeed.

He wrote furiously: “What must've happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal & then lie next to it smiling?”

His post was re-tweeted over 14,000 times, with many others taking to social media to slam the woman for her behaviour.

Rebecca Francis has received numerous death threats as a result of the photograph.

One person wrote furiously: “You are a complete waste of skin, I hope your guns faulty and you end up shooting yourself!”

Another disturbingly added: “Can I come? But the only bullet I'll be using is the one I put in your head.”

However, despite the furore, the huntress is not alone in her passion for hunting down animals for sport.

Thousands of tourists travel to Africa every year to collect ‘trophies’, paying specialised tour companies large sums of money for help hunting down the beautiful animals.

Killing a giraffe, for example, will cost somewhere in the region of £2,037 - as well as an approximate £298 charge for the day’s hunting on top.

Ricky Gervais has always been quick to out those involved in the sport online.

Just a few days ago, he shared another photograph of a woman posing beside her ‘kill’.

He wrote scathingly: “Well done. You managed to shoot a stationery, 14 foot peaceful creature with a high velocity rifle. Very sporting.”
