It’s not exactly news that weddings are expensive.

From the flowers, to the photographer, to the food – everything adds up, and many couples end up spending a huge sum of money to make sure their big day is everything they have always dreamed of.

And while many couples do choose to try and stick to a budget (Closer’s very own Matilda proves here that it’s possible to have a beautiful wedding for less than £5000), sometimes it’s hard to resist paying that little bit extra to make sure that it’s all perfect and how you want it.

But if there’s one thing that women are guilty of paying over the odds for, it’s the wedding dress itself.

A new study has revealed that British women are less likely to scrimp when it comes to the bridal gown – and it apparently rings even truer for brides-to-be in London.

Bridebook, a website designed to help you plan your big day, asked 5,000 women how much they shelled out for their dresses.

The results show that the average dress costs £1,385.

Considering that it’s something you will only wear once, that’s an eye-watering sum!

They also note that as the average UK salary is £27,600, this means that the one-off garment is a staggering 77% of your monthly earnings.

Wow!

Many women are choosing to buy their dresses ‘off the rack’ in order to avoid booking far-off fittings, attempting to get all members of the bridal party together for boutique appointments, and, of course, to save a few pennies when it comes to that big price tag.

Buying it ‘off the rack’ means that there is usually less selection, but it also means taking your dress home straightaway and not having to wait for a custom-made dress to be ready.

Whatever way you decide to do it, the most important thing is that you’re happy and that you feel like the belle of the ball on your wedding day!

Do you think £1,385 is far too much for a wedding dress, or is it a small fee to pay to feel like a princess on your big day? Let us know what you think @CloserOnline via Facebook or Twitter.
