Katie Jones took to Facebook earlier this month, to share a warning with parents everywhere about popular teething toy, Sophie the Giraffe.

Claiming that her six-month-old daughter, Paige, had been left ‘quiet and lifeless’ after playing with the toy, she wrote: “I don't normally do this. Yet I feel this time it's really necessary.

“Having before purchased Sophie the Giraffe for my eldest daughter, I had no worries purchasing another and did so for my now 6 month daughter Paige.

“However on the 8th July 2015 Paige was happily munching on Sophie. I walked to the kitchen to grab something.

“On my return I realised she had become quiet and lifeless.”

The mum continued: “When I checked on Paige she was turning blue. Paige had got the whole of one of Sophie’s legs lodged down her throat.

“I had to unhook it free and pull out the leg from the back of her throat. I was absolutely terrified.

“I gave some firm pats on my daughters back and this made her throw up and take a breath.”

She finished: “I’ve never felt so terrified in all my life and never in my life could I have foreseen this happening.

“Poor Paige was too young to remove the leg herself and would of suffocated if I hadn't of realised.

“I wish for this post to simply make parents aware of a danger I didn't think could happen. I'm shocked.

“Now looking at Sophie I realise how long the legs are and how dangerous this could potentially be to babies who love to chew.

“Please note my daughter is fine. Yet the memories of it will stay with me forever. Please share this post to forewarn other mums. Don't leave your child unattended with this teether.”

Since being posted to Facebook on the 9th July, the post has had nearly 3,000 shares with many parents commenting on it and thanking the mother for sharing her story.

However, speaking with Closer Online, the company who produce the Sophie toy said: "We became aware yesterday of this individual’s Facebook post of 9th July.

"No complaint has been made and they have not been in touch with us as of yet. Reading the Facebook post, we understand there has been no injury or harm caused. We take safety very seriously and thoroughly investigate any complaints we receive."

They added firmly: "Sophie la girafe® is not a choking hazard.

"The toy undergoes mandatory safety testing regularly and meets all European and worldwide safety standards for use by babies from birth + - which includes a detailed choke hazard analysis. The safety standards and analysis are precise and they conclude that Sophie la girafe® is not a choking hazard.

"Sophie la girafe® has been in production for 54 years and has been safely used by many millions of babies in that time."
